WOMEN’S CIRCUS – Expression of Interest for a Director to join our Board

Who we are:

Women’s Circus is a feminist arts organization dedicated to enriching the lives of women and communities through social circus and performance. Women’s Circus has provided training and creative opportunities for women and communities since 1991. Women’s Circus - founded by Donna Jackson for women who were the survivors of violence - was originally a project of the Footscray Community Arts Centre. In our 25th year, Women’s Circus is still proudly based in Melbourne’s vibrant West and now works with women of all ages and a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences as well as with a range of community partners. 

What we do:

Create socially engaged arts projects for women and communities and fosters collaborations between community participants and professional artists. Using a community cultural development model, we produce circus-theatre productions with participants and also a range of creative projects. We employ a diversity of arts practices through a rigorous aesthetic lens. We work with both individuals and communities and are dedicated to celebrating the artist in each individual.

Provide year-round circus and performance training program for women of all levels. Our training programs celebrate the physical and imaginative potential of the body and nurture self-awareness and self-esteem. The Women’s Circus also offers a bespoke training program.

Support the development of artists and the arts sector. Our residency programs, mentorships and creative opportunities share our 25 years of experience and resources with emerging and established artists. We seek to seek to redress the imbalance of opportunity for women in the arts.

Who are you? 

You are attracted to our mission and values and wish to be part of an active board to drive, guide and govern our wonderful organisation. You will have experience and or a passion for the arts and possess one or more of the following skills:

  • Marketing
  • Fundraising
  • Not for Profit experience (grant and acquittal processes)


Your Responsibilities as a board member:

Women’s Circus is a company limited by guarantee. All Directors of the Women’s Circus are bound by the company’s constitution, relevant rules and legislation, including the Corporations Act 2001.

The role and responsibilities of a Director are described in the Women’s Circus Board Charter and include:

  • Participation in, and contribution to, approximately 10 to 12 Board meetings per year
  • Oversight of effective governance of the organisation
  • Formulation of the strategic direction
  • Recruitment and oversight of the Executive Director
  • Reviewing, approving and monitoring the business plan and annual budget
  • Contribution to the development of board and organisational policies
  • Compliance with the legal requirements of being a director
  • Compliance with legal and regulatory requirements of running a company
  • Monitoring risks facing the organisation
  • Involvement on board sub-committees

In addition to the above, Directors are also expected to attend and assist in Women’s Circus fundraising, community and end of year shows, as well as promote and represent the Women’s Circus in a professional capacity at various functions and forums held across Melbourne.
