About Free to Feed:

Free to Feed is a not-for-profit social enterprise championing people who have sought refuge and asylum in Australia. Free to Feed’s advocacy is delivered through food-based initiatives – cooking classes, immersive experiences and events, and ever-evolving, curated offerings. Free to Feed is also the parent/partner of Now to Launch,a uniquely designed program that equips people seeking asylum and refugees with the skills, experience and community connections they need to unlock their entrepreneurial mindset and reach their business dreams.

Over the past 24 months, Free To Feed has implemented an innovative and empowering, strengths-based model to addressing what can feel like the insurmountable challenge of social isolation and underemployment for new migrants and people who have sought refuge and asylum in Australia.

Free to Feed and Now to Launch currently have a team of 6 (FTE equivalent) staff members and more than 80 regular and committed volunteers. The Free to Feed Program trains and employs a minimum of 12 beneficiaries per year, while the Now to Launch Program accepts up to 30 Entrepreneurs into it’s program (tutorials, coaching, co-working etc) per year.

The role/s:

The opportunity exists for three suitably qualified, committed and engaged individuals to join the Board of Directors to rejuvenate governance and provide expertise, guidance, mentoring and support to so that Free to Feed can thrive in this new phase of maturation.

Free to Feed is seeking to recruit three hands on Board Directors with expertise in one (or more) of the following areas:

  • Experience in Governance,  Experience serving as a Board Director for a Charity or Social Enterprise.
  • Senior Project and Program Management, Program Design and Delivery
  • Financial modelling / Accounting / Social Finance
  • Entrepreneurship, Education, Incubator Experience

Scope of the Role and Time Commitment:

At this stage in it’s development, Free to Feed requires highly engaged and active Board Members who are able to commit 2-3 hours per week to supporting and guiding Free to Feed staff members. It is critical that any prospective Board Members have enough experience to be able to coach, mentor and nurture the Free to Feed management team.

Free to Feed is due to rotate the Chair of the Board and Secretary positions and would like to hear from candidates who are interested in taking on this extra responsibility.

Board meetings are held once every 2-3 months on a weeknight in Northcote.

Board members may be asked to attend additional meetings if necessary.

It is expected that Board members will endeavour to attend important events.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • The Free to Feed Board provides leadership, governance and guidance to the organisation
  • Free to Feed Board members will be expected to take on a coaching and mentoring role within their area of expertise with the Free to Feed Management team members.
  • Free to Feed Board members are responsible for supporting and guiding the Program team (within their area of expertise) to ensure the best Program design and delivery
  • The Free to Feed Board is responsible for developing and overseeing Free to Feed’s strategic direction, goals and activities
  • The Free to Feed Board must ensure Free to Feed meets all legal and financial obligations and reporting requirements
  • The Free to Feed Board is responsible for developing and monitoring Free to Feed’s financial model and budget to ensure financial security and sustainability through income generation, philanthropy and fundraising.
  • The Free to Feed board will assess the strategic goals and financial targets of Free to Feed periodically and ensure that progress is being made.
  • Free to Feed Board members must positively represent Free to Feed to stakeholders and the wider community, and act as an ambassador for the organisation
