About Yazda, and Yazda Australia

Yazda Australia is a branch of Yazda Global, a non-government organisation based in Texas, USA, with several outlets around the world including in Australia. Yazda Global is a registered charity that seeks legal and social redress for the Genocide of Yazidis and other minorities in northern Iraq in 2014 (and still ongoing).

Yazda Australia was set up in 2017 and is a non-profit, non-government organisation based in New South Wales that seeks to raise awareness of the 1400 Yazidis from Iraq and Syria now settled in Australia, and to create opportunities for these newly settled Yazidis to achieve ‘real’ settlement by improving English language outcomes and thereby increasing practical social outputs.

Yazda seeks to fill the position of Director of its Board.

About the position

The Director assists the Board to develop and implement Yazda’s goals, build reputation and profile and fulfil governance obligations. The Director is accountable for managing day to day operational issues, the board, volunteers and Yazda’s communications. The Director provides high-level advice to the Board on operations, policy, advocacy and planning. 

The successful candidate will be an experienced, enthusiastic and committed leader with a capacity to inspire and motivate. Experience working closely with, or reporting to, a Board is preferred.

Demonstrated success in advocating for change, working with refugees, and working collaboratively, are important criteria for this role. The successful applicant will have sound political judgement, be patient and persevering.

Time commitment: This is a part-time volunteer (unpaid) position that requires approximately two to three full days per week. Board meetings are held monthly in the evenings via Skype for approximately 90 minutes.

Position description

Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, manage media requests, write media releases, correspond with relevant federal and local government departments, liaise with refugee service providers in Queensland and New South Wales, prepare agendas for monthly Board meetings; manage risk, manage the Yazda Australia Board.

Required skills

Strong teamwork abilities, hands-on experience with refugees, governance experience, financial or accounting experience, risk management, crisis management, knowledge of genocide scholarship/research, administrative skills.

Leadership qualities – vision, determination, ability to plan, conduct meetings, report, follow up, initiate timely corrective actions, engage positively with stakeholders, ability and willingness to mentor, train, and keep learning. Outstanding English language written skills. Fundraising skills.

Further details

The Yazda Australia board currently has six directors from New South Wales and Queensland. Yazidi communities are located in Coffs Harbour, Armidale, Wagga Wagga and Toowoomba. The Director may be expected to occasionally visit one or more of these communities each year.
