L2R Next Gen (L2R) is a not-for-profit dance organisation that provides opportunities for young people to participate in free weekly hip hop dance workshops in Melbourne’s West including young people from culturally and linguistically diverse, newly arrived and at-risk communities. 

L2R is excited to enter into our fourth year of operations, growing from a small community group into a professional arts and culture charity endorsed with DGR and TCC. Until now we have operated without a Chair (not ideal we know) but the time has come to fill this position with an inspiring, enthusiastic leader who is also known for being a legend. We are seeking a chair who is willing to contribute skills and knowledge in the following areas: - Assist with daily operations, working alongside the CEO - Provide mentoring to the CEO - Contribute to building sustainability and strategic direction of the organisation.

Background

Established in 2009, L2R has provided countless opportunities for newly arrived and disadvantaged young people to participate in free dance workshops held in Melbourne’s West. In January 2015 L2R was recognised by the Ministry of Arts Australia and was added to the Register of Cultural Organisations (RoCO) and endorsed as a charity with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. L2R’s purpose is to advance Arts and Culture, contributing to the nation’s vibrant cultural life.

In 2018,  L2R made the bold decision to move our HQ from a home office to a professional office space at the Footscray Community Arts Centre giving us greater visibility in community and a base to help meet the demands of our growing organisation.

L2R's support for young people goes well beyond the dance studio. L2R offers support for young people to access other local services, linking with their schools and creating professional performance and development opportunities. L2R employs the universal language of dance and the global youth culture of hip hop to promote inclusion, celebrate diversity while fostering individual creativity and creating a sense of community. Many young participants in L2R call it their 'family'.

Our Mission

To promote social cohesion, well-being and community through the delivery of free dance workshops to young people who would usually struggle to access classes due to social or socio-economic barriers (including poverty, disadvantage or experiences as recent migrants or refugees).

Selection Criteria

Essential Criteria:

  • Current Working with Children Check is mandatory.
  • A passion for dance, community development and working with young people.
  • Financial management skills and experience in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Strong communication skills, and experience in Chairing would be an advantage.
  • Collaborative leadership style.
  • Knowledge of corporate governance.
  • The ability to facilitate leadership and draw on the skills of the board to achieve excellent outcomes for the organisation.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Formal qualification in management.
  • Experience working in the not-for-profits arts or community sector.
  • A strong connection to Melbourne’s western suburbs and the local community.
  • Experience in fundraising in the not-for-profit sector.
