Yazda Australia Limited is a registered Australian charity, and a branch of Yazda Global, a non-government organisation that seeks legal and social redress for the Genocide of Yazidis and other minorities in northern Iraq in 2014 (and still ongoing).

Yazda Australia was set up in 2017 and is a non-profit, non-government organisation that seeks to raise awareness of the 1500 Yazidis from Iraq and Syria now settled in Australia, and to create opportunities for newly settled Yazidis to achieve ‘real’ settlement by improving English language outcomes and thereby maximising practical social outputs.

Yazda seeks to fill the position of Chair/Director of the Board, and Treasurer.
The successful applicants will have sound political judgement, be patient and persevering.

Time commitment: Both positions are part-time volunteer (unpaid) positions that require approximately two to three full days per week. Board meetings are held monthly in the evenings via Skype for approximately an hour.

Position description - Chair

Manage incoming and outgoing correspondence, particularly in relation to our English program, manage media requests, correspond with relevant federal and local government departments, liaise with refugee service providers in Queensland and New South Wales, prepare agendas for monthly Board meetings; manage risk, manage the Yazda Australia Board.

Required skills – Chair

Knowledge of Board Governance, hands-on experience with refugees, financial or accounting experience, risk management and crisis management experience, knowledge of genocide scholarship/research, administrative skills.

Desired attributes

Leadership qualities – vision, determination, ability to problem-solve, plan, conduct meetings, report, follow up, initiate timely corrective actions, engage positively and professionally with stakeholders, ability and willingness to mentor, train, and keep learning. Outstanding English language written skills. Fundraising skills.

Further details

The Yazda Australia board currently has six directors from New South Wales and Queensland. The Director may need to visit one or more of these communities each year.
