The International Day of Charity reminds us of the profound impact that compassion and support can have on individuals and communities, says the founder of the Warrior Woman Foundation, Jessica Brown.
This special day, observed annually on September 5, celebrates the power of giving and highlights the need to support those who are most in need.

The Warrior Woman Foundation is dedicated to transforming the lives of young women leaving the out-of-home-care system. The journey to establish the foundation was catalysed by my experience as a high school teacher in western Sydney.
Witnessing the struggles of young women in care and deeply affected by the tragic loss of my brother, I felt compelled to create a support system that addressed the unique challenges these young women face.
My vision led to the development of the Young Warrior Woman Program – a comprehensive initiative designed to empower these young women through financial literacy, healthy relationships, mental health support and more.
On August 29, the Warrior Woman Foundation held a poignant movie screening of Uncharitable, a documentary that challenges conventional views on charity and highlights the importance of innovative approaches to philanthropy.
The screening of Uncharitable provided an opportunity for attendees to engage with the themes of the film, which critiques traditional charitable models and advocates for more impactful and sustainable approaches.
This alignment with the Warrior Woman Foundation’s mission is evident in the film's focus on addressing systemic issues faced by vulnerable young women. As the documentary underscores, the most effective charities not only provide immediate relief but also work towards long-term solutions that empower individuals to break free from cycles of disadvantage.
Effective charity is not just about giving; it’s about creating lasting change.
The Young Warrior Woman program is a testament to this approach, offering a multidisciplinary support system that goes beyond surface-level aid. It addresses the pressing issues of financial instability, trauma and lack of resources that young women face as they transition out of care.
With a focus on practical skills such as money management and job readiness, combined with emotional and psychological support, the program is designed to equip participants with the tools they need to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
Our commitment to these young women is exemplified through the foundation’s programs and success stories.
One such story is that of Kaylah, whose journey from uncertainty to self-confidence highlights the profound impact of the Young Warrior Woman program.
Through mentorship, life skills training and emotional support, Kaylah was able to overcome significant challenges and pursue her dreams with renewed hope. Her experience underscores the critical role that tailored support programs play in transforming lives.
In addition to individual success stories, the Warrior Woman Foundation also addresses broader systemic issues affecting young women leaving care.
The program’s trauma-informed approach ensures that participants receive the support they need to heal and thrive. By providing education on identifying and preventing abuse, and fostering a supportive community, Warrior Woman helps young women navigate the complexities of their lives with greater confidence and resilience.
On this International Day of Charity, as we reflect on the importance of supporting charitable causes, the Warrior Woman Foundation stands as a powerful example of how targeted, compassionate and innovative approaches can make a significant difference.
By supporting initiatives like Warrior Woman, we contribute to a more equitable society where every individual has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
To get involved and make a meaningful impact, consider supporting the Warrior Woman Foundation through donations, sponsorships, or volunteering as a mentor. Your contributions will help ensure that the foundation can continue its vital work and provide ongoing support to young women in need.
As we celebrate the International Day of Charity, let us remember these words from Uncharitable: "Effective charity is not just about giving; it’s about creating lasting change."
The Warrior Woman Foundation exemplifies this spirit, and through our collective efforts, we can help build a brighter future for vulnerable young women everywhere.
