Organisation Amazing will develop and deliver a series of career focused workshops facilitated by South Sudanese Australian community members designed to match young people with career opportunities and mentoring in an industry they’re interested in.
South Sudanese Australian young people in the west metropolitan Melbourne are overrepresented in youth justice. This overrepresentation has increased over the past 5 years and impacts the wider community.
One of the drivers of contact with the justice system is unemployment and poverty.
Effective career counselling will support young South Sudanese Australians determine their job and career opportunities and secure employment.
Over six months, young people from the ages of 16-25 will be invited to attend employment workshops. An initial workshop will be led by experienced career counsellors to understand participants interests and career goals. This workshop will be followed by ten industry specific workshops that are facilitated or co-facilitated by members of the SSA community and provide information and guidance about pathways and career opportunities in the industries identified by the young people at the initial workshop.
The series will conclude with a networking workshop focused on connecting young people to work and volunteering opportunities in the local community. Young people will be provided opportunities and support to access mentoring and/or work experience in their chosen industry for six months after the workshop series conclusion.
