This week celebrates the work of thousands of Australian women community directors at the coalface of not-for-profits of every kind.
While women dominate this sector, there's still more men in charge as a proportion of our paid and volunteer workforce, including at the boardroom table.
We think that should change, for everyone's sake because more women on boards isn't just about equality, and it's not just a gender issue.
Women make up more than half of the population, and it simply makes sense to truly represent the community in positions of leadership and influence. If you can't find candidates to fill those positions, you're probably not looking hard enough.
Rightly, our leaders in every walk of life will be turning their attention to the status of women on International Women's Day on Friday, March 8. We'll be hosting an event that day too.
And although it won't be a national holiday, unlike 27 other countries across the globe, it's an excellent time to acknowledge and further the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
In Australia, many of us will be adopting the UN-sponsored themes of "More Powerful Together" or the US-driven campaign #BalanceforBetter.
Both campaigns imply many things, not least that gender equality is an issue for everyone, and the sooner we strive towards it, the better off we'll all be.
Community directors, of course, are in an excellent position to promote gender equality and diversity, and to strike down discrimination in all its forms.
The Institute of Community Directors Australia - with its unerring focus on the needs of the community sector - has already developed a library of resources to help you achieve those goals.
This includes template HR and diversity policies and strategies, help sheets, commentary from leading women in our regular news and opportunities to mix with leading women thinkers.
This week, we encourage you to reflect on the state of gender equality within your organisation, and consider: What else can we do?
The resources and events on this page should give you a good start!
